RULE 2. SCORING
Flag Football
Flag Football
Touchdown 6 points
Safety 2 points
PAT (3-yard line) 1 point (any legal play)
PAT (10-yard line) 2 points (any legal play)
Defensive Return (live play) 6 points
Defensive Return (PAT) Value of the attempt
Field Goals and PAT Kicks are not permitted.
On PAT attempts, the offense can choose, left, center or right hash.
Defensive scoring occurs only by interception. Interceptions may be returned.
An interception returned for a score awards (6) points during normal play and (2) points during a PAT attempt.
Any ball secured by a defender before touching the ground is an interception.
Interception examples include:
A defender catches a forward pass in the air.
A defender catches a pitched ball in the air.
A quarterback unintentionally hands the ball to a defender.
Flag cannot kick.
Enforcement is a Referee judgment decision.
The rule applies to Scrimmage Plays, Overtime, and attempts to Retain the Ball.
If a ball carrier clearly breaks free and would have scored but for an illegal act by the defense, a touchdown is awarded.
During a Retain attempt, if a ball carrier clearly breaks free and would have gained the line to gain but for an illegal act, a first down is awarded.
If the ball carrier commits a foul during the play, penalties offset and the down is replayed. Last Man is not awarded.
Last Man eligibility includes, but is not limited to, the following defensive actions: diving deflags, pushing or pulling, stripping or holding, or tackling.
Ball carrier actions that negate Last Man include stiff arms, flag guarding, charging, spinning, or jumping.
Sideline or spectator interference that prevents a clear score results in ejection and Unsportsmanlike Conduct. If Last Man criteria are met, the score is awarded in lieu of the yardage penalty.
A safety awards (2) points and possession to the scoring team at its own 20-yard line.
To promote , sportsmanship, player safety and efficient game management, the following Mercy Rule shall apply to all TYFA games:
A game shall be declared final immediately when a team has scored (50) or more points and holds a lead of (30) or more points over its opponent at any point during the game. Once both conditions are met, the game will end and the score at that time will be recorded as the official final score.
Both conditions (50+ points scored and a 30+ point margin) must be satisfied for the Mercy Rule to take effect. If either condition is not met, the game will continue as normal.
The clock does not run. It stays at a normal clock.
Examples:
Example 1: Team A leads Team B 50–20.
Team A has scored 50 points and leads by 30 points. The Mercy Rule applies, and the game ends immediately.
Example 2: Team A leads Team B 49–14.
Although the margin is 35 points, Team A has not yet scored 50 points. The game continues.
Example 3: Team A leads Team B 52–25.
Team A has scored 50+ points, but the lead is only 27 points. The game continues.
Example 4: Team A leads Team B 58–28.
Team A has scored 50+ points and leads by 30 points. The Mercy Rule applies, and the game ends immediately.
A forfeit is recorded only if the game had not started.
Outcomes:
No score or not start - offended team receives a 1-point win.
Tied game - offended team receives 1-point to break the tie.
Offended team was losing - offended team receives a 1-point win.
Offended team was winning - score stands.
Scores are final once the half-ending whistle sounds.
Instant replay and video review are not used.
Referees may correct obvious scoring errors before the next snap.
A team may challenge a scoring error before the next play.
Corrections must occur immediately or are forfeited.
If Referees refuse a timely challenge, the team must not take the field and must contact TYFA at 210-326-5241.
Allowing play to continue voids all future corrections.
