Division Status and Movement Guidelines
TYFA offers two divisions of play (Division 1 and 2) and uses the following guidelines to determine annual division placement. Final placement is reviewed each season and adjustments may be made based on scheduling needs, district alignment, competitive balance, or other relevant factors. Only Fall stands are used.
New startup organizations will be placed in Division 2 regardless of coaches or player experience.
New organizations that are established but largely unknown will be placed in Division 2 and may request placement in Division 1.
New organizations that are established and well known for competitive success will be placed in Division 1 and may request placement in Division 2.
New organizations fielding two teams in each age bracket will have both groups placed in the same division unless a request is made to split divisions, which requires review by the Senior Executive Board.
Organizations that were TYFA members for at least one year, folded, and later returned will be placed in Division 2 and may request Division 1 placement.
Organizations that were TYFA members for at least one year, left TYFA, and later returned will be placed in the division they held when they left, pending review by the Senior Executive Board.
Organizations that change their name or ownership after at least one year of membership will remain in their current division unless adjusted under this policy.
Entire chapters may be placed in a single division based on chapter size, with ten organizations being the minimum threshold to split a chapter into multiple divisions.
Requests for division changes must be submitted to HelpDesk@tyfa.com and will be reviewed by the Senior Executive Board.
Division 2 organizations with a two-year average:
50% or less remain in Division 2
51% to 64% are placed at TYFA’s discretion
65% or higher move to Division 1
Division 1 organizations with a two-year average:
40% or less move to Division 2
41% to 54% are placed at TYFA’s discretion
55% or higher remain in Division 1
These evaluations apply only after a division change.
Organizations moved to Division 1 that experience a one-year drop of 30% or more from their two-year average will return to Division 2 for two years.
Organizations moved to Division 2 that achieve a one-year percentage of 75% or higher will return to Division 1 for two years.
Organizations may request placement in Division 1 by emailing HelpDesk@tyfa.com; approved requests require the organization to remain in Division 1 for two years.
Small town exceptions are no longer recognized.
When an organization splits teams in accordance with TYFA rules, one group will be placed in Division 1 and the other in Division 2 unless an Administrative Waiver is submitted to place both in the same division.
