When an organization joins TYFA for the first time, its starting division depends on its situation:

SITUATION STARTING DIVISION     CAN REQUEST CHANGE?

• Startup organization (brand new) D2 No-placement is mandatory

• Established organization, but little is known of their history D2 Yes-may request D1

• Established organization, well-known to be strong/good D1 Yes-may request D2

• Organization with two teams in each age bracket Both placed together Yes-may request to be D1 and D2

Any request to changhe division placement must be emailed to HelpDesk@tyfa.com and will be reviewed by the Senior Executive Board. The email must be detailed and have substance or it will not be reviewed. 

If an organization was previously part of TYFA for at least one year and is now returning, treatment depends on why they left:

HOW THEY LEFT PLACEMENT UPON RETURN     CAN REQUEST CHANGE?

• Organization FOLDED, then later returns D2 Yes-may request D1

• Organization LEFT (did not fold), then later returns TYFA's Decision Subject to review by TYFA

• Organization changes its name or ownership Sqame Division they were in Subject to future review under policy

• An entire chapter may be placed into one division based on the number of organizations within it.

• Magic number: a chapter with 10 or more organizations is the threshold used to determine a chapter-wide split.

Each organization's 2-year average winning percentage determines whether it moves divisions, stays, or is reviewed at TYFA's discretion.

IF CURRENTLY IN D2:

2-YEAR AVERAGE WIN % RESULT

• 50% or less   Stays in D2

• 51% - 64%   TYFA's choice for division placement

• 65% or more   Moves up to D1

IF CURRENTLY IN D1:

2-YEAR AVERAGE WIN % RESULT

• 40% or less   Moves down to D2

• 41% - 54%   TYFA's choice for division placement

• 55% or more   Stays in D1

This check applies only in the year immediately following a division move.

SCENARIO TRIGGER RESULT

Moved up to D1 1-year win % drops 30% or more compared to Returns to D2

the organization's previous 2-year average.

Moved down to D2 1-year win % is 75% or more Returns to D1

Moved down to D2 1-year win % is over 51% AND the organization Returns to D1

won a State Championship

This is a separate, one-time path that applies only to organizations brand new to TYFA in their very first year of play:

TOPIC RULE

Requesting to play D1 voluntarily Email HelpDesk@tyfa.com; review by the Competition Committee. If approved, the organization must remain in D1 for 2 years.

Senior Teams Excluded because they are not carried in the Fall Season.

Split Organizations If an organization splits their teams, one team is placed in D1 and the other in D2. A request can be made to play both teams in the same division.

All divisions change request Must be emailed to HelpDesk@tyfa.com for review by the Senior Executive Board.

Spring Season Winning % is not used for calculating Fall division movement.
